Octolively Kit hack with sound

Hello,
so I am a design student working with Octolively for the first time for a project. This is an interactive surface that would use the sensors in the Octolively kit to not only control the light but also control sound. So the purpose would be as the person swipes above the surface, not only would the LED's light up but sound would be generated as well.

How would you guys be going about this. I know the system is open-source, so I was wondering what types of programs will you guys use for such a task?

Thank you.
